ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini are competing closely for the title of the most widely used GenAI tools in the US. According to a report by Morgan Stanley, the daily usage of GenAI has increased to 14% among people aged 16 and older, up from 11% six months prior.
The report emphasises that consumer behaviour in commercial settings is evolving. Approximately 25-45% of users currently use these platforms for shopping, comparing prices, and investigating products, with Gemini demonstrating the most significant growth in this domain.
Among the age groups of 16-24 year olds, the report states that ChatGPT maintains its leading position, with 22% of the respondents using it daily and 68% using the platform several times a month. This surpassed Gemini and Meta AI, which have a daily usage rate of 16% and 17%, and monthly usage of 46% and 47%, respectively.
As reported by the Financial Express, Gemini has experienced the quickest growth in the last six months, attributed to significant launches, such as the independent iOS app debuting in November 2024, the complete rollout of Gemini 2.0 in February 2025, and the launch of AI Overviews for search in March 2025. These initiatives have contributed to Gemini garnering increased attention and usage among various age demographics.
Morgan Stanley highlighted that this might result from Google’s influence on consumer search habits and recommends that Google enhance Gemini’s functionalities to maintain its advantage.
The report indicates that Gemini is slightly ahead of ChatGPT in terms of commercial applications. This advantage highlights Google’s superior user behaviour in commercial activities. To maintain its leading position in the market, Google should consider launching additional features for Gemini/TPU within its extensive user base and data set.
Additionally, according to the report, Gemini users are actively exploring new products across various age demographics, with the 25-34 age range at the forefront. Among those aged 16-24, 35% indicated they have made purchases on Gemini.
