Ban on Social Media Giants Leaves Nepal in Limbo

The Nepal government has initiated one of the most sweeping digital restrictions in South Asia, instructing internet service providers to ban 26 popular social media and messaging platforms.  The move cuts off access to global giants such as Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X (formerly Twitter), WhatsApp, Reddit, LinkedIn and Clubhouse. Officials said the platforms had failed to comply with regulations that required them to register with the government. The ban, which took effect late September 4, has triggered confusion, backlash and fears of censorship, with critics warning of severe economic and democratic repercussions.
